EMT Uniform

ABOUT

Uniforms often depict a large number of things, most of which have a significant importance attributed towards them. Whether it be an indication of training, education, or experience, a uniform is a representation of that person’s identity and what they are doing. The EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) uniform, for example, signifies all of these things. This uniform belongs to LaGuardia Community College student Nicole Puza, a person who had strongly identified with the value of their willingness to help people, and pursued that as a path in life. To Nicole, this object signifies “the person wearing it is responsible, trustworthy, caring, and above all, they’re there to help.” Aside from the moral implications of this object, we can also observe that the fabric is a rather sleek button-up shirt, with pockets and badges. EMT uniforms have a few badges. The badge on the right arm signifies the worker’s certification. On the top of this uniform we can observe a badge which identifies the area in which this worker operates, and on the bottom it identifies the worker as an “Emergency Medical Technician.”

After some research into similar uniforms, shirts such as this one, worn by EMTs are often constructed of polyester, wool, and lycra. As this specific item had been worn by the prior holder not terribly long ago, this object would be dated fairly recently, perhaps as early as 2021, but most likely a few years prior to this date. The origin of this object is from the United States, as the badge that indicates the location of this worker states “New York State”. The history of emergency medical technicians is that in 1862, Major Jonathan Letterman, who is considered the father of US emergency medical service (EMS), wanted to triage and help wounded soldiers in the Civil War, instead of gathering them at the end of the battles. Once success in this endeavor was achieved, the first civilian ambulance was instituted in Cincinnati, Ohio.
